Franciscan Medical Group, part of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, is currently seeking a PER DIEM Histrotechnician for our Franciscan Dermatology Clinic in Sequim, WA! - Come join a collaborative team in a busy Mohs surgery clinic in sunny Sequim! -Job Summary:Processes and prepares tissues for microscopic examination and analysis using a variety of techniques in a laboratory to support health professionals in diagnosing and treating disease and medical disorders. -Tissue handling duties may include receiving, accessioning, gross sectioning, processing, embedding, cutting and staining of tissue slides. Duties also include ensuring accurate quality control, preparing documentation, and maintaining the lab and equipment. Incumbents must possess knowledge of the basic pathologic conditions and skills in the use of precision equipment. Attention to detail, knowledge and skill in properly handling tissue samples, the use of medical terminology, abbreviations and safety hazards common to Histology are essential in the performance of duties. -Essential Duties: -Receive tissue specimen from surgeon with specific mapping instructions.
  • Relax tissue to ensure full sections and place specimen in cryostat machine to freeze. Avoids tissue transfer and false positive readings. -
  • Map tissue with clear, translatable orientation. -Performs technical duties necessary to prepare tissues for microscope examination and analysis, which may include receiving, gross sectioning, preparing, and embedding tissue specimens.
    • Cut frozen tissue specimen, stain and process.
    • May process and embed, cut and stain all types of tissue specimens as assigned.
    • Ensures precision with application of mounting medium for minimum air bubbles and avoids smearing of tissue sections.
    • May gross section and dictate descriptions of specimens.
    • Performs both routine and complex special procedures with the understanding of tissue structures, techniques, principles, theory and instrumentation.
    • Maintains the integrity of the specimen and inspects all specimens for any issues that could contaminate final results.
    • Follows defined procedures, escalating non-standard issues or questions to supervisor. Completes all required documentation in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner in accordance with CHI-FH standards and procedures.
      • Assures specimen labeling requirements are met and necessary clinical information is available as needed.
      • Documentation may include verbal, dictated, transcribed, manual, or computer documentation systems.Maintains work area, equipment and temperature charts per established quality standards.
        • Maintains a neat, clean, and orderly work area.
        • Complete all instrument function verification, maintenance, and documents according to procedure in work area. Ensure that equipment defects and malfunctions are reported and repaired.Properly handles and disposes of all bio hazardous and chemically hazardous materials in accordance with department procedures. -Assists with and/or participates in quality assurance audits.
          • Monitor quality control and regulatory compliance under CLIA and WA state regulations.Performs related duties as required. - -
            Education/ Work Experience:Education/experience necessary to meet the requirements for Histotechnician (HT-ASCP) certification by the ASCP American Society for Mohs Histotechnology and which is either: -
            Route 1: Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science or chemical, physical or biological scienceOR
            Route 2: Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program,OR
            Route 3: Licensure or certification in the State of Washington as a Medical Assistant Certified or Registered, LPN or RN. - Completion of Mohs Technology Quality Assurance course of the American Society for Mohs Histotechnology. -Licensure/Certifications:
            • Certification as a Histotechnician HT (ASCP) or Mohs Histotechnician (ASMH) obtained within 90 days of hire into position.
