The Data and Artificial Intelligence team in Microsoft’s
Developer Division is working on the future of AI for Developers!
We are a group of scientists, researchers and engineers with
passion for using AI to improve the productivity of millions of
developers around the world. We have released AI for code
advancements in Github Copilot, VS Code, Visual Studio and other
Microsoft Copilots We are seeking an entrepreneurial and creative
Senior Research Scientist to lead groundbreaking research projects,
taking these from research into product. You will collaborate with
scientists, engineers and designers across Microsoft Research,
Microsoft product teams and GitHub. You will have an opportunity to
build and train state-of-the-art models, and opportunities to both
apply and advance existing approaches of using Large Language
Models for software engineering, from using RAG to evaluation. Most
importantly, you will have an opportunity to work closely with
several developer product teams to run experiments, evaluate,
iterate and improve your AI projects on a large scale. Microsoft’s

Required Qualifications: Doctorate in relevant field OR equivalent
experience. 1 years of research experience with Large Language
Models Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer
and/or government security screening requirements are required for
this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the
following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud
Background Check: This position will be required to pass the
Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two
years thereafter. Preferred Qualifications: Doctorate in relevant
field AND 2 years related research experience o OR equivalent
experience. Experience publishing academic papers as a lead author
or essential contributor. Experience participating in a top
conference in relevant research domain. Research Sciences IC4 - The
typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD
$117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable
to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and
New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this
role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
Microsoft will accept applications for the role until June 17,
2025. Responsibilities Lead the development of state-of-the-art
models for code completion and editing, pushing the boundaries of
code understanding and generation. Design and prototype efficient
inference algorithms to enable fast, interactive code generation
experiences at scale. Develop retrieval-augmented and program
analysis models that improve a model’s awareness of large and
complex codebases, enabling context-rich code assistance.
Collaborate across disciplines with product teams across Microsoft
and Github Stay up to date with the research literature and product
advances in AI for software engineering You will research and
develop an understanding of state-of-the-art insights, tools, and
technologies and apply deep subject matter knowledge to support
planning for research projects. You’ll begin to evaluate insights
based on their impact and value. You will advance a research agenda
through one or more research projects, yielding new algorithms,
prototypes, insights, and more. You will contribute to ethics and
privacy policies and help develop technologies that uphold company
values. You will expand collaborative relationships with relevant
product or business groups and participate in activities such as
filing patents and authoring white papers. You’ll collaborate with
other researchers and publish papers as a lead author. You will
provide mentorship by participating in onboarding new team members.
You’ll guide team members in processes and scenarios, research
projects.
