Job Description:
Position Summary
The Hematology Oncology Nurse Practitioner provides advanced
nursing care to patients with hematologic disorders and cancer
diagnoses. This role involves diagnosis, treatment management,
patient education, and coordination of care across
multidisciplinary oncology teams. The NP works collaboratively with
oncologists, hematologists, nurses, pharmacists, and support staff
to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care.
Key Responsibilities Clinical
Care
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including medical
histories and physical examinations
- Diagnose and manage hematologic and oncologic conditions
- Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests (labs, imaging,
biopsies)
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans
- Prescribe medications, including chemotherapy and supportive
therapies (within scope of practice)
- Monitor patient response to treatment and adjust care plans as
needed
Procedures & Treatment Management
- Administer and manage infusion therapies (chemotherapy,
immunotherapy, biologics)
- Manage treatment-related side effects and complications
- Participate in bone marrow biopsy procedures (if
applicable)
- Provide survivorship care and manage long-term follow-up
Patient & Family Education
- Educate patients and caregivers on diagnosis, treatment
options, and disease progression
- Provide guidance on symptom management, nutrition, and
supportive care resources
- Discuss goals of care, palliative care options, and advance
directives
Care Coordination
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (oncology, radiology,
pathology, surgery, palliative care)
- Coordinate referrals and ensure continuity of care
- Work with social workers and case managers to address
psychosocial needs
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in EMR systems
- Ensure compliance with Washington State regulations and
institutional policies
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical
research when applicable
Qualifications Education &
Certification
- Master s or Doctorate degree in Nursing (MSN or DNP)
- Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
- Board certification as a Nurse Practitioner (e.g., FNP, AGNP,
ACNP)
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) or Advanced Oncology Certified
Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP) preferred
Licensure
- Active Washington State Nurse Practitioner license
- Current DEA license and prescriptive authority
- BLS/ACLS certification (depending on employer
requirements)
Experience
- 1 3+ years of experience in oncology, hematology, or related
specialty preferred
- Experience in infusion therapy and chemotherapy management
strongly preferred
- Familiarity with clinical trials and research protocols is a
plus

- Ability to provide compassionate care in complex and
emotionally challenging situations
- Knowledge of oncology medications, protocols, and symptom
management

Work Environment
- Hospitals, cancer centers, outpatient oncology clinics, or
academic medical centers
- May involve rotating inpatient and outpatient
responsibilities
- Potential for on-call or weekend coverage depending on
practice
