Job Description:
United Way of Snohomish County (UWSC) is searching for a leader
who believes in creating more equitable systems for families with
young children and knows how to manage system-wide and
organization-wide change processes. Over the last five years,
United Way of Snohomish County has undertaken an organizational
transformation. We have completed the first cycle and launched a
second three-year cycle of community investments into a
collaborative approach called CORE: Creating Open Roads to Equity.
This bold approach recognizes that solving a complex issue like
poverty requires complex, collaborative solutions. We are not the
typical United Way of the past. With CORE, we have moved beyond the
traditional role of simply being a fundraiser to being a funder,
active partner, and convener focused on a 2-Generational and
Collective Impact approach.
Our four Core Collaboratives-groups of more than 100 nonprofit,
public, and private partners working together towards long-term
solutions- each hold a unique shared vision focused on
collaborative outcomes to help children birth to age 8 and the
adults in their lives escape the traps of poverty. Our commitment
to this work is long-term because disrupting systems to advance
CORE requires patience, care, and tenacity for the journey as we
help collaboratives build their risk-tolerance and the capacity to
change and innovate.
This CORE Approach recognizes that although every family is unique
with different strengths and struggles, as they engage in social
services, all families face common experiences that reveal barriers
and inequities that are built into those systems. Instead of just
helping select individuals who can access programming to beat the
odds, CORE seeks to change the odds for entire population groups by
identifying and changing the barriers and conditions that cause the
trap of poverty. CORE Collaboratives place families at the center
of their partnerships, learning from collective family experiences
to design interventions that make it easier for children birth to
age 8 and the adults in their lives to find success together. Our
CORE work is focused on children birth to age 8 because of the
profound benefits of early learning and development in young
children. In Snohomish County, more than 18,000 families are
trapped in poverty and almost 41,500 are struggling to get by. For
a family of four, the Federal Poverty Level is $25,100 a year. Even
when struggling families earn three times the Federal Poverty
Level, they still earn less than the basic cost of living in our
region.
CORE combines two promising national models: Collective Impact,
which is intentional, measured collaboration, and a 2-Generational
Approach, which focuses on the well-being of the whole family.
United Way is an active partner in four Core Collaboratives that
work intentionally to remove barriers within and between the
systems related to:
Nurturing the early years has a profound effect on a child's
ability to learn, as well as overall health later in life.
Creating pathways for parents and caregivers to get additional
training, education and work skills can lead to higher wages,
benefits, and opportunities for advancement.
Even a relatively small increase in household income can have a
significant impact on a child's environment and future stability.
Reducing adverse childhood experiences and increasing access to
healthcare are imperative to any family's ability to thrive.
Meaningful relationships with family, friends, and neighbors are
powerful social networks to help keep families healthy and
functional.
About Snohomish CountyNestled between beautiful Puget Sound to the
west and extending to the crest of the majestic Cascade Mountains
to the east, Snohomish County is a region of natural beauty and
spectacular outdoor recreation opportunities and is also home to
world-renowned art studios and cultural attractions. Washington's
third-largest county by population, Snohomish County is
experiencing robust population and business growth. A global center
of the aerospace industry, the County is one of the world's leading
hubs of high-tech innovation-from clean energy and biotechnology to
advanced technology manufacturing. Snohomish County is also a
regional leader in agriculture, within the rapidly growing Seattle
metropolitan region. The Leadership Opportunity: Managing the Change
Process
United Way of Snohomish County's transformation into an
impact-driven modern United Way is one of hundreds of local United
Ways across the country who are laser-focused on a new business
model to achieve deep community impact. With the employee giving
model expected to continue declining in years to come, and donors
demanding a genuine relationship, United Ways know they must move
beyond transactional relationships to achieve true community
change. Within this context, United Way of Snohomish County is
proactively engaging donors and measuring its outcomes, yet it is
clear that achieving significant and deep community impact is an
incremental process.
UWSC is currently providing approximately $840,000 in awards
annually directly to the CORE work. This vital work brings great
opportunity to the region as United Way is known as a convener that
brings people together to address the greatest needs of the
community. In addition, in FY 2020, over $250,000 was invested into
the community through donor designations.

CORE Collaboratives and to generate positive operating income.

grantmaking, community convening, and board and staff policies and
practices.
Foster a positive and supportive organizational culture that
improves staff morale, cohesion, and retention.
